Vertical Growing for Limited Space
Handmade macramé hanger crafted from 100% recycled cotton, designed to hold microgreens trays vertically. Frees up valuable windowsill space by stacking trays in tiers. Available in 2-tier or 3-tier configurations with pink or yellow decorative trim.
This solves the practical problem of running out of horizontal growing space. If you're growing multiple trays of microgreens simultaneously, your windowsill fills up quickly. Vertical stacking means you can grow more in the same footprint.
What You Get
- Handmade macramé hanger from 100% recycled cotton
- Choice of 2-tier (58cm total length) or 3-tier (83cm total length)
- Choice of pink or yellow decorative trim detail
- Top loop for hanging (approximately 8cm)
- Approximately 25cm spacing between tray levels
Important: Planting trays sold separately. This is the hanger only.
Size Compatibility
The 2-tier hanger works perfectly with the standard MicroKit terracotta trays (20cm diameter). The 3-tier hanger is sized for the smaller MicroKidsKit trays. Make sure you're ordering the appropriate size for your existing trays.
If you don't already have Growing People Growing trays, you'll need to purchase those separately. The hanger itself is just fabric—it holds trays, it doesn't include them.
Installation Requirements
You need somewhere secure to hang this. A ceiling hook rated for the combined weight of the hanger plus multiple trays of wet growing medium. Don't underestimate this weight—terracotta trays filled with damp soil and established microgreens are considerably heavier than they look.
Alternatively, hang from a sturdy curtain pole or wall-mounted bracket. Whatever you're hanging from needs to handle several kilograms without sagging or pulling loose.
Measure your available vertical space before ordering. The 3-tier hanger at 83cm requires nearly a metre of clear vertical space, plus whatever clearance you need above and below.
Practical Benefits
Maximises growing capacity in limited space. If you're flat-dwelling or have minimal windowsill area, vertical growing lets you expand production without requiring more floor space.
Allows growing without a windowsill entirely. Hang near a window or anywhere in a bright room. You're not limited to horizontal surfaces anymore.
Creates visual interest. Tiered hanging plants look considerably more attractive than a row of trays on a windowsill. This makes growing microgreens more aesthetically acceptable in shared living spaces.
The Honest Limitations
Watering becomes trickier. Water dripping from upper trays onto lower trays is inevitable. You'll either need to remove trays for watering (fiddly) or accept that your watering technique needs refinement to avoid oversaturating lower levels.
The bottom tray receives less light than the top tray. This is physics. If light matters for your varieties, rotate trays periodically or accept that bottom-tier growth will be slightly less vigorous.
Accessing trays requires reaching up. Harvesting from the top tier of a 3-tier hanger means stretching or standing on something. If you have mobility limitations, this matters.
The hanger adds complexity to an otherwise simple growing system. If you're still figuring out basic microgreens cultivation, adding vertical growing introduces additional variables. Master the fundamentals first, then optimise for space.
Durability and Care
Recycled cotton is durable but not indestructible. The hanger will soften and potentially stretch slightly with use, particularly if you're loading it with heavy, wet trays repeatedly.
Expect some water exposure from misting and general growing operations. Cotton handles this fine, but keep an eye on the decorative trim areas where different materials meet—these are potential weak points.
Machine washing isn't recommended. Spot clean if necessary. The macramé construction won't appreciate aggressive washing machine action.
Colour Options
Pink or yellow trim detail adds a small pop of colour at the top. This is decorative rather than functional. Choose based on what works with your space or what makes you happy when you look at it.
The main body is natural cotton colour regardless of trim choice.
Gift Potential
Works well paired with a MicroKit or MicroKidsKit as a complete growing setup gift. The hanger alone isn't particularly meaningful to someone who doesn't already grow microgreens, but combined with a kit it becomes a comprehensive system.
Suitable for people with limited space who've mentioned wanting to grow more. The hanger specifically addresses the "I'd grow more but I've run out of room" problem.
Who This Actually Benefits
People already growing microgreens who want to scale up production without additional horizontal space. If you're still on your first kit, you probably don't need this yet.
Urban dwellers with minimal windowsill area but adequate vertical space near windows. If you have ample windowsill space, save your money—horizontal growing is simpler.
Anyone who wants their microgreens setup to look intentional and attractive rather than like a windowsill cluttered with random trays.
About the Handmade Aspect
Each hanger is individually crafted, which means slight variations in appearance. The functional specifications remain consistent, but expect minor differences in tension, knot placement, and overall character between hangers.
This isn't a defect—it's inherent to handmade items. If you require absolute uniformity, handmade products generally aren't appropriate.
