Shea Butter Soap Bar That Deeply Moisturises Without Fragrance
Pure, simple, effective. This unscented shea butter cleansing bar proves you don't need essential oils or complex formulations to get beautifully clean, nourished skin. Just four natural plant-based ingredients doing exactly what they should, cleansing thoroughly whilst delivering deep moisture. Nothing more, nothing less.
Made by hand in Yorkshire using traditional cold-process methods, each 95g bar is built around luxurious shea butter - one of nature's most effective skin moisturisers. No fragrance means no potential irritants, no overpowering scents, no reactions. Just gentle, creamy cleansing that leaves your skin feeling comfortable and properly cared for.
Why Shea Butter Works for Sensitive Skin
Shea butter (Butyrospermum parkii) isn't just a trendy ingredient - it's been used in African skincare for thousands of years because it genuinely works.
Exceptional moisturising power: Shea butter is rich in fatty acids including oleic acid, stearic acid, and linoleic acid. These fatty acids closely resemble the lipids in your skin's natural barrier, allowing them to absorb deeply and effectively. Your skin recognises shea butter as something it can actually use, not just something sitting on the surface.
Vitamins A and E: Shea butter is naturally high in vitamin A (which supports skin cell renewal) and vitamin E (a powerful antioxidant that protects skin from environmental damage). These aren't added - they're inherently part of the shea butter itself.
Anti-inflammatory properties: The compounds in shea butter, particularly lupeol cinnamate, have natural anti-inflammatory effects. Brilliant for calming irritated, reactive skin without adding potentially irritating essential oils.
Non-comedogenic: Despite being deeply moisturising, shea butter doesn't clog pores. It's suitable for all skin types, including acne-prone skin that still needs moisture.
Protects skin barrier: Regular use of shea butter helps strengthen your skin's natural protective barrier, making it more resilient to irritants, weather, and environmental stressors.
Perfect for sensitive skin: No essential oils, no synthetic fragrance, no colours, no potential irritants. This is as gentle as soap gets whilst still being properly effective. If your skin reacts to everything, this is where you start.
The soap is built on shea butter as the primary ingredient (you'll notice "Sodium shea butterate" listed first), with coconut and rapeseed oils providing gentle cleansing. The result is a creamy lather that cleanses without stripping, leaving your skin feeling clean but never tight or dry.
Why Choose a Soap Bar Over Liquid
One 95g bar typically lasts 4-6 weeks with daily use - that's roughly 45 washes, replacing 2-3 plastic bottles of liquid body wash. The maths is simple: better for your wallet, better for the environment, and genuinely better for your skin.
Cost-effective: Bar soap delivers far more washes per pound than liquid alternatives. You save money whilst getting premium ingredients.
Travel-friendly: No TSA restrictions, no leaking bottles. Perfect for sensitive skin that needs consistency even when travelling.
Zero plastic: No pump bottles, no packaging waste. Even the cardboard box is recyclable.
No water filler: Liquid body wash is typically 60-80% water. You're paying to ship water in a plastic bottle. Soap bars are concentrated cleansing and moisturising power.
Longer shelf life: Soap bars don't dry out or separate. They cure and harden over time, becoming even longer-lasting.
Actually fragrance-free: Many products labelled "fragrance-free" or "unscented" still contain masking fragrances to hide the smell of other ingredients. This soap contains no fragrance whatsoever - synthetic or natural. What you smell is just the gentle, natural scent of the plant oils and shea butter.
About Friendly Soap
Friendly Soap was founded in 2009 in Brighouse, West Yorkshire, by two friends who were frustrated by the lack of genuinely simple, effective soap options for sensitive skin. They wanted to prove that natural ingredients, used properly, could outperform synthetic alternatives without irritating reactive skin.
Every bar is still handmade in their Yorkshire workshop using the cold-process method - the traditional soap-making technique that preserves the natural properties of plant oils and butters. Unlike mass-produced soap, which is made quickly using heat and harsh chemicals, cold-process soap takes weeks to cure properly. The result is a harder, longer-lasting bar that retains all the beneficial properties of its ingredients.
This shea butter cleansing bar is one of their simplest formulations - deliberately. Just four ingredients: shea butter for deep moisture, coconut oil for cleansing, rapeseed oil for gentleness, and water. That's it. No essential oils, no botanical extracts, no colours, no fragrance, no unnecessary complications. When you're creating soap for genuinely sensitive skin, what you leave out matters as much as what you put in.
Friendly Soap source their shea butter from women's worker cooperatives in Ghana, ensuring fair wages and ethical production. The company is certified by The Vegan Society and Cruelty Free International. They've earned a 'Best' rating from Ethical Consumer. Their commitment is simple: make the gentlest, most effective soap possible whilst treating people and planet with respect.
How to Use & Store Your Soap Bar
For face and body:
Wet the bar and lather directly onto your skin, or work up a lather in your hands first. The creamy lather spreads easily and rinses clean without leaving any residue. Use daily on face and body - the pH (8-9) is gentle enough for most skin types. Many people with sensitive skin find this becomes their only cleanser - face, body, hands, everything.
For dry or winter skin:
This soap is particularly brilliant in cold weather when central heating and harsh winds strip moisture from your skin. The shea butter helps protect your skin barrier throughout the day, not just during washing.
Making your soap last longer:
Keep your bar on a draining soap dish or soap bag between uses. Soap left sitting in water dissolves quickly - good drainage doubles the life of your bar. Shea butter soap is quite soft when wet, so good drainage is especially important. If it gets mushy, just let it dry out for a day or two and it'll firm up again.
Store backup bars in a cool, dry place. They'll continue to cure and become harder over time, which makes them last even longer.
Frequency of use:
This soap is gentle enough for twice-daily use on face and body. Unlike harsh cleansers that can only be used sparingly, you can use this as often as you need without worrying about damaging your skin barrier.

What Makes This Different
Most soaps - even "natural" ones - rely on essential oils for scent and marketing appeal. Essential oils can be wonderful, but they're also potential irritants for sensitive skin. This soap takes a different approach: it proves that you don't need them at all.
The four ingredients are listed in order of predominance:
- Sodium shea butterate (saponified shea butter) - the primary ingredient, providing deep moisture and skin barrier support
- Sodium cocoate (saponified coconut oil) - creates lather and provides cleansing power
- Sodium rapeseedate (saponified rapeseed oil) - adds gentleness and improves lather quality
- Aqua (water) - necessary for the soap-making process
That's the complete ingredient list. Four ingredients. No essential oils, no botanical extracts, no colours, no fragrance - synthetic or natural, no preservatives (bar soap doesn't need them), no SLS, no parabens, no palm oil, no complications.
The shea butter comes from women's cooperatives in Ghana, paid fair wages for their work. The cold-process method preserves all the beneficial compounds in the shea butter - vitamins, fatty acids, everything. You're getting the real thing, not a processed version with the good stuff stripped out.
