Scalp Care Shampoo Bar

An itchy, flaky scalp doesn't just feel uncomfortable: it undermines your confidence. This targeted shampoo bar addresses the root cause rather than just masking symptoms, using lime, cinnamon, and clove essential oils to rebalance your scalp's microbiome whilst charcoal and allantoin calm irritation and control excess oil.

Made in London by Fruu Cosmetics with upcycled fruit ingredients, this waterless, plastic-free bar delivers 45+ washes in a compact 55g package. The carefully balanced formula cleanses thoroughly without aggravating sensitive scalps, whilst the warming spice blend provides a distinctive scent that's invigorating without being overwhelming.

Key Facts:

  • 55g bar providing 45+ washes
  • Targets itchy, flaky, oily scalps
  • Balances scalp microbiome with lime, cinnamon, clove
  • Charcoal absorbs excess oil and impurities
  • Allantoin soothes irritation and inflammation
  • Enriched with watermelon seed, avocado, coconut, argan oils
  • 98% plant-derived, 100% natural fragrances

Why This Formula Targets Scalp Issues

Lime essential oil provides natural antimicrobial properties that help control the yeast and bacteria overgrowth often responsible for scalp itching and flaking. The astringent properties also help regulate oil production, addressing the cycle where excess oil feeds the microorganisms that cause irritation. Lime's fresh, sharp scent also helps mask any medicated smell from the treatment ingredients.

Cinnamon leaf oil has potent antimicrobial and antifungal properties that target the organisms causing scalp imbalance. Cinnamon also stimulates circulation to the scalp, which promotes healing and encourages healthy hair growth. The warming sensation can feel soothing on an irritated scalp whilst the spicy scent creates an invigorating wash experience.

Clove bud oil brings powerful antiseptic and anti-inflammatory properties. It's particularly effective against the fungal overgrowth that causes dandruff and seborrheic dermatitis. Clove also has mild analgesic properties that can help relieve the discomfort of an irritated scalp. The warm, spicy aroma complements the cinnamon beautifully.

Charcoal powder acts like a magnet for oil, dirt, and impurities. It draws out excess sebum that feeds scalp issues whilst also removing dead skin cells and product buildup. The gentle exfoliating action helps prevent flakes from accumulating whilst the oil absorption keeps scalp feeling fresh and balanced longer.

Allantoin is the soothing ingredient that makes this bar gentle enough for irritated scalps. It promotes healing, reduces inflammation, and helps repair damaged skin barrier. Allantoin also increases the moisture content of skin, preventing the dry, tight feeling that can make scalp issues worse. It's particularly valuable for scalps that are both oily and irritated (a common combination).

Oat kernel flour (avena sativa) provides additional soothing and anti-inflammatory benefits. Colloidal oatmeal has been used for centuries to calm irritated skin, and it works just as effectively on scalps. The gentle cleansing action removes impurities without aggravating sensitivity.

Watermelon seed oil is exceptionally light and won't aggravate oily scalps. Rich in essential fatty acids, it nourishes without heaviness whilst providing anti-inflammatory benefits. It's particularly good for scalps that need moisture but can't handle heavy oils.

Avocado oil penetrates deeply to nourish the scalp and strengthen hair from within. Rich in vitamins A, D, and E, it supports scalp health and hair growth whilst being gentle enough for sensitive, irritated skin.

Coconut oil provides antimicrobial benefits whilst moisturising. It penetrates the hair shaft to strengthen hair whilst also supporting a healthy scalp environment. The lauric acid in coconut oil is particularly effective against fungal and bacterial overgrowth.

Argan oil brings vitamin E and fatty acids that nourish without greasiness. It helps regulate oil production naturally, making it valuable for oily scalps that also suffer from irritation. The anti-inflammatory properties also help calm redness and sensitivity.

Squalane mimics your skin's natural oils, making it exceptionally gentle and non-irritating. It provides moisture balance without triggering additional oil production or feeding the microorganisms that cause scalp issues.

Guar conditioning agent detangles whilst you wash, reducing the mechanical irritation from combing that can aggravate sensitive scalps. It also provides slip that makes washing gentler on both hair and scalp.

Understanding Scalp Microbiome Balance

Your scalp hosts billions of microorganisms: bacteria, fungi, and yeast that normally exist in harmony. Problems arise when this balance shifts, often triggered by:

Excess oil production: Sebum feeds certain yeast species that cause irritation and flaking. Charcoal and lime oil help control this cycle.

Disrupted pH: Alkaline products disturb the slightly acidic environment that beneficial microorganisms prefer. This gentle, balanced formula respects your scalp's natural pH.

Environmental stress: Pollution, hard water, and product buildup create conditions where problem organisms thrive. The cleansing action removes these triggers whilst antimicrobial oils prevent overgrowth.

Inflammation: When your scalp's barrier is compromised, sensitivity increases and the microbiome becomes unstable. Allantoin and oat flour repair and soothe, allowing the microbiome to rebalance naturally.

This bar addresses all these factors: it cleanses without disrupting pH, controls oil without stripping, provides antimicrobial action without being harsh, and soothes inflammation whilst the scalp heals.

The Solid Shampoo Advantage

Shampoo bars are particularly beneficial for scalp issues because they're concentrated and free from the preservatives and additives that liquid shampoos require.

No water content: Bacteria and fungi need water to grow. Solid bars don't provide that environment, eliminating the need for harsh preservatives that can irritate sensitive scalps.

Concentrated actives: Without water taking up 70-80% of the formula, there's room for higher concentrations of the antimicrobial oils, soothing agents, and nourishing oils that actually treat scalp issues.

Gentler preservatives: The minimal water content means milder preservation systems work effectively. Sensitive scalps often react to the aggressive preservatives in liquid shampoos.

More product, less packaging: This 55g bar replaces 2-3 plastic bottles whilst providing 45+ washes. For chronic scalp issues requiring ongoing treatment, the longevity and value matter.

Travel-friendly: Take your scalp treatment anywhere without liquid restrictions or leaking bottles. Consistency in treatment helps resolve scalp issues faster.

The Wonky Fruit Story

Fruu Cosmetics sources surplus and imperfect fruits that would otherwise be discarded. The lime oil, coconut oil, and watermelon seed oil in this shampoo bar come from fruits that didn't make supermarket shelves but are chemically identical to their prettier counterparts.

Every bar is handmade in London in small batches, ensuring quality control and supporting local employment. Fruu maintains transparent practices about ingredients, sourcing, and manufacturing.

How to Use for Best Results

Wet your hair and scalp thoroughly with warm (not hot) water. Hot water can aggravate scalp irritation and stimulate excess oil production.

Rub the bar directly onto your scalp, focusing on problem areas. The charcoal will create a slightly grey lather: this is normal and indicates it's working to absorb oils and impurities.

Massage the lather into your scalp with your fingertips (not nails) using gentle circular motions. Take your time: the antimicrobial oils and allantoin need contact time to work effectively. Spend at least 2-3 minutes massaging.

Work the lather through the length of your hair, though the focus should remain on the scalp where issues originate.

Rinse thoroughly with warm water. Make sure you rinse completely: any residue can contribute to buildup that aggravates scalp issues. Rinse until water runs completely clear.

Follow with conditioner bar applied only to mid-lengths and ends, avoiding the scalp. Conditioning the scalp can contribute to oil buildup.

Frequency: Use 2-3 times per week initially. As your scalp improves, you may be able to reduce to once or twice weekly. Don't over-wash: frequent washing can trigger rebound oil production.

Consistency: Scalp issues take time to resolve. Use consistently for at least 2-3 weeks before evaluating results. The microbiome needs time to rebalance.

Storage: Keep in a well-drained soap dish between uses. Allow to dry completely. Wet environments can reduce the effectiveness of the antimicrobial ingredients.

Complementary care: Avoid touching your scalp throughout the day, change pillowcases regularly, clean hair brushes weekly, and avoid heavy styling products that contribute to buildup.

About Fruu Cosmetics

Fruu Cosmetics started with frustration about two problems: excessive waste in the beauty industry and the disappointing performance of many "eco-friendly" alternatives. Founder Tom Paddy wanted products that actually work whilst being genuinely sustainable.

The tagline "Solid cosmetics that finally work" reflects this philosophy. Too many sustainable beauty products compromise effectiveness for eco-credentials. Fruu refuses to make that trade-off, creating formulations that perform as well as or better than conventional alternatives.

Based in London, everything is designed and handmade in small batches. This ensures consistency and quality whilst keeping production local and traceable. They're vegan, cruelty-free, and PETA-approved.

Perfect For

  • Itchy, flaky, or irritated scalps
  • Dandruff and seborrheic dermatitis
  • Oily scalps with excess sebum production
  • Scalp sensitivity and inflammation
  • Fungal or bacterial scalp imbalances
  • Those who've tried medicated shampoos without success
  • Anyone wanting natural scalp treatment
  • People sensitive to harsh anti-dandruff formulas
  • Maintaining scalp health after treatment
  • Chronic scalp issues requiring ongoing care

What Makes This Different

Most anti-dandruff shampoos rely on harsh active ingredients like zinc pyrithione or coal tar that can be drying and irritating. This bar takes a gentler approach: supporting your scalp's natural balance rather than aggressively suppressing symptoms.

The microbiome-focused approach addresses the root cause. Rather than just removing flakes, this rebalances the scalp environment so flakes don't form in the first place. It's the difference between symptom management and actual treatment.

The combination of antimicrobial action (lime, cinnamon, clove) and soothing support (allantoin, oat flour) means the bar treats without aggravating. Many scalp treatments are effective but harsh; this is effective and gentle.

The charcoal addition provides oil control without stripping. Oily scalps need cleansing but can't handle aggressive degreasing that triggers rebound oil production. Charcoal absorbs excess oil whilst the nourishing oils maintain moisture balance.

The spice blend scent is distinctive and pleasant rather than medicinal. Most scalp treatment products smell clinical or unpleasant. The warming cinnamon and clove with bright lime creates an invigorating scent that makes treatment something you look forward to rather than endure.

The solid format provides concentrated treatment without the preservatives that irritate sensitive scalps. The waterless formulation allows higher concentrations of active ingredients whilst requiring gentler preservation.

The vegan formulation achieves professional results without common scalp treatment ingredients like coal tar or selenium sulfide. It proves effective scalp care doesn't require harsh chemicals.
