The Scent

Saffron is one of the more unusual top notes in fragrance. Derived from the stigmas of Crocus sativus, it has a warm, slightly spiced, and faintly leathery character that gives oriental fragrances their distinctive depth and complexity. It opens the scent with richness rather than brightness, which is why saffron-led fragrances feel more enveloping than citrus or floral openings.

Amberwood is a synthetic accord built to evoke the warmth and resinous depth of amber combined with the dry, smooth quality of wood. It is a common heart and base note in oriental fragrances precisely because it bridges floral and woody elements without pulling in either direction too strongly. In Rouge it provides the warm, rounded middle that carries the saffron opening into the cedar base.

Cedar brings dryness and structure to the base. It is clean and slightly smoky, grounding the warmer elements above it and giving the overall fragrance longevity and definition. Cedar is one of the most versatile base notes in perfumery and works particularly well in oriental florals where it prevents the sweetness of the heart from becoming cloying.

The Formulation

Rouge shares its base formulation with the Bella bar from the same Diva Spa range. Both are syndet (synthetic detergent) bars rather than traditional cold-process soap bars. Syndet bars are formulated at a lower, more skin-compatible pH than soap-based bars, which makes them gentler on colour-treated or chemically processed hair where the cuticle benefits from a milder cleanse. The formulation includes Polyquaternium-7, a conditioning polymer that reduces static and improves combability, and aloe vera leaf juice for additional scalp conditioning. The result is a bar that cleans thoroughly and leaves hair soft without requiring a separate conditioner for most hair types.

Switching to a Shampoo Bar

Shampoo bars require a brief adjustment period, typically one to three weeks, while the scalp recalibrates from liquid shampoo's stronger detergent action. During this period hair may feel different to usual: slightly heavier or with a different texture at the roots. This passes.

In hard water areas, a diluted apple cider vinegar rinse after washing (roughly one tablespoon to a cup of water) will clear any mineral build-up and restore shine.

How to Use

Wet hair thoroughly. Run the bar directly along the hair from roots to mid-lengths, or lather between the palms first and apply as you would liquid shampoo. Work into the scalp with fingertips. Rinse thoroughly with warm water.

Between uses, store the bar on a draining soap dish or wooden rack away from the direct flow of the shower. Keeping it dry between washes extends its life considerably.
