Peppermint and eucalyptus is one of the more purposeful fragrance combinations in hair care. Both are cooling on the scalp, both have established cleansing and clarifying properties, and together they produce a scent that is sharp and invigorating without veering into the synthetic freshness of most commercial shampoos. This bar from Friendly Soap uses genuine essential oils of both, built on the same conditioning oil base as their fragrance-free bar: rapeseed, coconut, castor, and argan.

The Scent and What It Does
Peppermint essential oil (Mentha piperita) contains a high concentration of menthol, the compound responsible for its characteristic cooling sensation. On the scalp, menthol creates a mild vasodilatory effect: it temporarily increases blood flow to the surface, producing the familiar tingling sensation and leaving the scalp feeling refreshed and stimulated after washing. It also has well-documented antimicrobial properties, making it a practical choice for scalps prone to product build-up or excess sebum.
Eucalyptus essential oil (Eucalyptus globulus) complements peppermint rather than competing with it. Where peppermint is sharp and intensely cool, eucalyptus is slightly camphorous and more rounded, giving the overall scent depth and staying power. It has been used in hair and scalp preparations for its clarifying and antimicrobial properties and works particularly well alongside peppermint for scalps that benefit from a more thorough cleanse.
Both oils naturally contain limonene, a compound that occurs widely in plant essential oils and is listed in the ingredients as required by UK cosmetics regulations. Those with a known sensitivity to limonene should consider the fragrance-free bar from the same range instead.
Together, the two oils produce a scent that is clean and functional rather than perfumed. It reads as freshness rather than fragrance, which makes this a practical daily choice for anyone who wants their shampoo to smell of something specific and purposeful rather than a generic floral or synthetic blend.
The Conditioning Base
The oil base is identical to Friendly Soap's fragrance-free bar. Castor oil provides slip and frizz reduction via its high ricinoleic acid content. Argan oil, added post-saponification so its conditioning properties are retained in the finished bar, smooths the cuticle without weight. Rapeseed oil contributes a creamy lather and long-chain fatty acids that support the hair shaft without stripping it. Coconut oil handles cleansing action and lather volume, balanced by the higher proportion of conditioning oils so the overall effect is thorough without being drying.
Who This Bar is For
The peppermint and eucalyptus combination makes this bar particularly well suited to oily or fine hair, where the clarifying properties of both oils help keep the scalp balanced between washes. The cooling sensation at the scalp is also something many people find genuinely pleasant, particularly after exercise or in warmer months, and the refreshed feeling it produces is noticeably different from a neutral shampoo.
It suits normal hair equally well as a daily or regular shampoo. The conditioning oil base means it does not over-cleanse, and the argan oil ensures the lengths and ends are conditioned alongside the scalp treatment.
Switching to a Shampoo Bar
Shampoo bars require a brief adjustment period, typically one to three weeks, while the scalp recalibrates from liquid shampoo's stronger detergent action. During this period hair may feel different to usual: slightly heavier or with a different texture at the roots. This passes. The peppermint's scalp-stimulating effect can make the transition feel more active than it does with an unscented bar, which some people find reassuring.
In hard water areas, a diluted apple cider vinegar rinse after washing (roughly one tablespoon to a cup of water) will clear any mineral build-up and restore shine.
How to Use
Wet hair thoroughly. Run the bar directly along the hair from roots to mid-lengths, or lather between the palms first and apply as you would liquid shampoo. Work into the scalp with fingertips, where the cooling sensation from the peppermint will be most noticeable. Rinse thoroughly with warm water. A second application is rarely necessary.
Between uses, store the bar on a draining soap dish or wooden rack away from the direct flow of the shower. A bar used daily will typically last four to six weeks depending on hair length and thickness.
