A conditioner that leaves a cooling sensation in the scalp is not something most people have experienced. This peppermint and eucalyptus conditioner bar from Friendly Soap, handmade in the UK, does exactly that: the menthol in the real peppermint essential oil produces the same invigorating chill on the scalp that the matching shampoo bar delivers, carrying the sensation through the entire wash routine rather than ending it at the rinse. Built on the same cocoa butter and castor oil base as the rest of the Friendly Soap conditioner range, it leaves hair soft and manageable at pH 7, properly balanced for hair.

How Conditioner Bars Work
Conditioner bars work differently to shampoo bars. Where a shampoo bar cleanses by removing oil and residue, a conditioner bar deposits conditioning agents onto the hair shaft, coating it to reduce friction, improve slip, and seal the cuticle. The result is hair that is easier to detangle, softer to the touch, and more manageable after drying.
The key ingredient is behentrimonium methosulfate (BTMS), a conditioning compound derived from rapeseed oil. It is positively charged, which means it is attracted to the negatively charged surface of wet hair and deposits evenly as you work the bar through. Unlike the diluted conditioning agents in most liquid conditioners, which are 70-80% water, the bar delivers concentrated active ingredients directly to the hair with no dilution. It rinses cleanly without leaving a heavy or greasy residue.
If you prefer liquid conditioner, this bar can also be melted down using hot water into a traditional liquid form. Add the bar to a small amount of very hot water, allow it to melt, let it cool, and decant into a bottle. The conditioning performance is identical.
The Conditioning Ingredients
Cocoa butter (Theobroma cacao seed butter) is the richest conditioning ingredient in this bar. Solid at room temperature, it melts on contact with warm wet hair, releasing fatty acids and natural emollients that coat and soften the hair shaft. It is particularly effective on dry or coarse hair, and its natural mild scent complements the peppermint and eucalyptus rather than competing with them.
Castor oil (Ricinus communis seed oil) provides slip and a film-forming quality that distributes the bar evenly through the hair and reduces the friction between strands during detangling. It adds shine and frizz control that carries through to dry hair.
Cetyl alcohol is a fatty alcohol that improves the bar's texture and helps it glide through hair without dragging.
Butylene glycol is a humectant that draws moisture into the hair shaft during application, delivering hydration alongside the surface-level conditioning.
The Scent
Peppermint essential oil (Mentha piperita) contains menthol, which produces a cooling sensation on the scalp on contact. In a conditioner this is an unusual quality: most conditioners are purely passive on the scalp, whereas the menthol here creates an active, refreshing sensation that makes the conditioning step feel like part of an invigorating routine rather than just a functional follow-up to shampooing.
Eucalyptus essential oil (Eucalyptus globulus) adds a slightly camphorous, rounded depth to the peppermint, giving the scent longevity and preventing it from being one-dimensional. Together they produce a clean, sharp freshness that pairs directly with the Peppermint and Eucalyptus shampoo bar from the same Friendly Soap range.
Limonene occurs naturally in both oils and is listed as required by UK cosmetics regulations. Those with a known sensitivity should choose an alternative conditioner bar.
Who This Bar is For
The peppermint and eucalyptus scent makes this the most invigorating conditioner in the range, and particularly well suited to use after the matching shampoo bar for a complete, consistent wash routine. The cocoa butter and castor oil base provides rich conditioning suited to dry, thick, or colour-treated hair. For fine hair, apply from mid-lengths to ends only to avoid weighing the roots down.
The cooling scalp sensation also makes it a good choice for those who wash after exercise, where the invigoration of the peppermint extends naturally from the shower into the rest of the routine.
How to Use
After shampooing, squeeze excess water from hair. Run the conditioner bar from mid-lengths to ends, or warm briefly between the palms and apply as you would liquid conditioner. Work through with fingers to distribute evenly. Leave for one to two minutes, then rinse thoroughly with cool water. Cool water helps close the cuticle and improves shine.
Store on a draining soap dish between uses and allow to dry fully between washes.
