Lavender and tea tree is a pairing with a long track record in scalp care. Lavender is calming and gently antimicrobial; tea tree is more assertively clarifying, with a clean, medicinal edge that cuts through product build-up and keeps the scalp in balance. Together they make a shampoo bar with genuine functional purpose rather than fragrance for its own sake, built on the same conditioning oil base Friendly Soap use across their range: rapeseed, coconut, castor, and argan.

The Scent and What It Does

Lavender essential oil (Lavandula angustifolia) is one of the most widely used botanicals in hair and scalp preparations, and for good reason. Its primary active compounds, including linalool and linalyl acetate, have well-documented antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties that make it effective for soothing an irritated or dry scalp. The scent itself is familiar and calming: floral without being sweet, and grounding rather than sharp. Lavandula angustifolia is the true lavender species, distinguished from lavandin hybrids by a finer, more complex fragrance and a higher proportion of active esters.

Tea tree oil (Melaleuca alternifolia) comes from a small Australian tree and is one of the most thoroughly researched natural antimicrobial ingredients available. Its active compound, terpinen-4-ol, is effective against a broad range of bacteria and fungi, which is why tea tree has become a standard ingredient in scalp-focused hair care. On the scalp it works as a clarifying agent: it cuts through excess sebum and residue, helps keep the follicle environment clean, and reduces the conditions that lead to itching and flaking. The scent is clean and slightly medicinal, which rounds out the lavender rather than competing with it.

Both oils naturally contain limonene and linalool, compounds that occur widely in plant essential oils and are listed in the ingredients as required by UK cosmetics regulations. Those with a known sensitivity to either should consider the fragrance-free bar from the same range instead.

The Conditioning Base

The oil base is shared across the Friendly Soap shampoo bar range. Castor oil provides slip and frizz reduction via its high ricinoleic acid content. Argan oil, added post-saponification so its conditioning properties are retained in the finished bar, smooths the cuticle without weight. Rapeseed oil contributes a creamy lather and long-chain fatty acids that support the hair shaft without stripping it. Coconut oil handles cleansing action and lather volume, balanced by the higher proportion of conditioning oils so the overall effect is thorough without being drying.

Who This Bar is For

The lavender and tea tree combination is particularly well suited to anyone who experiences scalp dryness, irritation, or mild flaking. Tea tree's clarifying action keeps the scalp environment clean while lavender soothes rather than stimulates, making this a gentler option than the peppermint and eucalyptus bar for those whose scalp tends towards sensitivity rather than oiliness. It is not a medicated treatment, but the antimicrobial properties of both oils make it a meaningfully functional choice for scalp maintenance.

It also works well as an everyday shampoo for normal hair where the scent is the primary draw. The lavender in particular is a pleasant, unobtrusive fragrance that does not linger heavily on the hair after drying, which suits those who do not want their shampoo to compete with perfume or other products.

For those whose scalp is highly reactive or who prefer no fragrance at all, the fragrance-free bar remains the better starting point. For a more invigorating scalp experience, the peppermint and eucalyptus bar provides stronger stimulation and a sharper scent profile.

Switching to a Shampoo Bar

Shampoo bars require a brief adjustment period, typically one to three weeks, while the scalp recalibrates from liquid shampoo's stronger detergent action. During this period hair may feel different to usual: slightly heavier or with a different texture at the roots. This passes. The tea tree's clarifying effect can be particularly helpful during the transition period for scalps accustomed to frequent washing.

In hard water areas, a diluted apple cider vinegar rinse after washing (roughly one tablespoon to a cup of water) will clear any mineral build-up and restore shine.

How to Use

Wet hair thoroughly. Run the bar directly along the hair from roots to mid-lengths, or lather between the palms first and apply as you would liquid shampoo. Work into the scalp with fingertips. Rinse thoroughly with warm water. A second application is rarely necessary.

Between uses, store the bar on a draining soap dish or wooden rack away from the direct flow of the shower. A bar used daily will typically last four to six weeks depending on hair length and thickness.
