Lavender and rose geranium is a combination that smells like a considered choice rather than a default. The lavender is cool and herbal; the rose geranium is warmer, slightly green, and more complex than its name suggests. Together in this shampoo bar from Friendly Soap, handmade in the UK, they produce a scent that is genuinely pleasant to wash with every day: present enough to feel like a small luxury, soft enough not to compete with anything worn afterwards. Built on a conditioning base of castor, argan, rapeseed, and coconut oils, it leaves hair soft and the scalp balanced, with a fragrance that fades just right.

The Scent and What It Does
Lavender essential oil (Lavandula angustifolia) is one of the most widely used botanicals in hair and scalp preparations. Its primary active compounds have well-documented antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties that make it effective for soothing a dry or mildly irritated scalp. The scent is familiar and grounding: floral without being sweet, with a clean herbal quality that makes it one of the most versatile fragrance components in natural cosmetics. Lavandula angustifolia is the true lavender species, with a finer, more complex fragrance than lavandin hybrids and a higher proportion of active esters.
Rose geranium essential oil (Pelargonium graveolens) is extracted from the leaves of the scented geranium plant rather than from roses, despite its name. The scent shares some of the floral character of rose but is greener, more herbaceous, and considerably more interesting as a fragrance ingredient. In hair care it is used for its balancing properties: it is one of the few essential oils considered beneficial for both dry and oily scalp types, as it is thought to help regulate sebum production rather than simply stripping or suppressing it. It is also antimicrobial, which makes it a functional rather than decorative addition to the formulation.
Three naturally occurring fragrance compounds are listed in the ingredients as required by UK cosmetics regulations: linalool from the lavender, and citronellol and geraniol from the rose geranium. These occur in the essential oils themselves rather than being added separately. Those with a known sensitivity to any of these compounds should consider the fragrance-free barfrom the same range instead.
The Conditioning Base
The oil base is shared across the Friendly Soap shampoo bar range. Castor oil provides slip and frizz reduction via its high ricinoleic acid content. Argan oil, added post-saponification so its conditioning properties are retained in the finished bar, smooths the cuticle without weight. Rapeseed oil contributes a creamy lather and long-chain fatty acids that support the hair shaft without stripping it. Coconut oil handles cleansing action and lather volume, balanced by the higher proportion of conditioning oils so the overall effect is thorough without being drying.
Who This Bar is For
The lavender and rose geranium combination makes this bar particularly versatile in terms of hair and scalp type. Where the peppermint and eucalyptus bar is best suited to oily or fine hair, and the lavender and tea tree bar leans towards scalps that benefit from active clarifying, this bar is more balanced: the rose geranium's sebum-regulating properties make it a reasonable daily choice for normal to combination scalps that do not have a specific issue to address but benefit from the functional properties of both oils.
It is also the most straightforwardly pleasant of the three scented bars in the Friendly Soap range, which makes it a natural choice for anyone who simply wants a well-made shampoo bar that smells good. The floral character is softer and more rounded than lavender alone, and the rose geranium gives it a warmth and complexity that holds up after rinsing rather than fading immediately.
For a more invigorating scalp experience, the peppermint and eucalyptus bar is the stronger option. For a scalp-focused bar with active clarifying properties, the lavender and tea tree bar is more targeted. For no fragrance at all, the fragrance-free bar uses the same conditioning base without any essential oils.
Switching to a Shampoo Bar
Shampoo bars require a brief adjustment period, typically one to three weeks, while the scalp recalibrates from liquid shampoo's stronger detergent action. During this period hair may feel different to usual: slightly heavier or with a different texture at the roots. This passes.
In hard water areas, a diluted apple cider vinegar rinse after washing (roughly one tablespoon to a cup of water) will clear any mineral build-up and restore shine.
How to Use
Wet hair thoroughly. Run the bar directly along the hair from roots to mid-lengths, or lather between the palms first and apply as you would liquid shampoo. Work into the scalp with fingertips. Rinse thoroughly with warm water. A second application is rarely necessary.
Between uses, store the bar on a draining soap dish or wooden rack away from the direct flow of the shower. A bar used daily will typically last four to six weeks depending on hair length and thickness.
