What Konjac Is

Konjac (Amorphophallus konjac) is a root vegetable native to Asia that has been used in Japanese skincare for centuries. The root is processed into a fine fibre that is then formed into sponge shapes and dried. The fibre is naturally porous and slightly alkaline, with a pH of around 9.5 to 10, which is gently balancing for skin that tends towards acidity from pollution, sweat, and product build-up.

The fibre structure is what makes konjac effective as a cleansing tool. Each fibre is hollow, which gives the sponge its characteristic water retention and the soft, gel-like feel when fully saturated. The physical texture provides a degree of exfoliation that is firm enough to shift dead skin and residue but considerably gentler than most exfoliating products. It works as a standalone cleanser on days when the skin needs only light cleansing, and as an applicator tool with your usual cleanser for a more thorough result.

How to Use

Soak the sponge in warm water for a minute or two until it is fully expanded and soft throughout. Squeeze out the excess water gently: the sponge should feel full and jelly-like rather than dripping. Use in gentle circular motions on the face or body, with or without cleanser. The konjac fibre will do the work without pressure.

After use, rinse the sponge thoroughly, squeeze out excess water gently, and hang to dry in a well-ventilated spot. Do not wring or twist the sponge as this damages the fibre structure. Replace when the sponge begins to break down or feel rough, typically after four to six weeks of daily use.
