About the Jalapeño

Jalapeño (Capsicum annuum) sits in the middle range of the Scoville heat scale at approximately 2,500 to 8,000 units: warm enough to be interesting in cooking, mild enough to use generously. It is one of the most versatile kitchen chillies, with a bright, grassy heat picked green that deepens and sweetens if left to ripen red on the plant. The heat is concentrated in the seeds and white membrane, so removing them reduces the intensity considerably. A single productive plant can supply enough fresh chillies to make a meaningful difference to a household that cooks with them regularly.

What This Isn't

This is a seed kit, not a plug plant. You are starting from scratch, which means patience is required. Jalapeños typically take two to four weeks to germinate and a further ten to twelve weeks before the plant begins to fruit. A cold windowsill or insufficient warmth is the most common cause of failure: seeds need consistently above 20°C to germinate well. A warm kitchen windowsill or a propagator lid is the practical solution.

The kit does not include a pot. Start in a small 9cm container with the coir disc, then pot on into at least 5 litres of good compost as the plant develops. Jalapeños grow to 60 to 90cm and need space to produce well.

How to Grow

Prepare the coir disc by placing it in a small pot and adding approximately 150ml of water. Allow it to expand fully, then loosen the surface. Sow seeds two to four per pot at about 5mm depth. Cover lightly and press down gently. Provide warmth: place in a consistently warm position above 20°C. A clear plastic bag or propagator lid over the pot retains heat and moisture during germination. Keep the compost moist but not wet and wait. Germination typically takes two to four weeks. Thin seedlings to the strongest once true leaves appear, snipping the others at the base. Pot on when roots show at the base of the pot. Feed with a tomato or chilli fertiliser once flowering begins. Harvest regularlyto encourage continued fruiting. Pick green for bright heat, or leave to ripen red for deeper flavour.

Start seeds indoors between late January and the end of March for the best results in a UK growing season.

Perfect For

  • Home cooks who use fresh chillies regularly and want their own supply
  • Anyone curious about growing food on a windowsill or balcony
  • A small, well-considered gift for someone who cooks
  • Stocking fillers or additions to a kitchen-themed gift
  • First-time growers wanting something manageable and genuinely useful
  • Anyone with a greenhouse or sunny outdoor space for a productive summer crop

What Makes This Different

Most supermarket chilli kits include a single coir disc and just enough seeds for one attempt. This kit includes seeds for multiple sowings, which means a failed first germination becomes a learning opportunity rather than a wasted purchase. The jalapeño is a well-judged choice for a mini kit: productive, versatile, and reliably suited to UK indoor growing conditions. Seeds are batch-tested for germination quality before packaging.
