Fragrance is the single most common cause of scalp sensitivity and contact dermatitis, and most shampoos, including many marketed as natural, use it liberally. This bar from Friendly Soap contains none. The formulation is stripped back to four conditioning oils, water, and the natural salts that bind them into bar form: nothing else. What it lacks in complexity it more than compensates for in conditioning performance, because the oils Friendly Soap have chosen are among the most effective hair conditioning ingredients available.

The Four Oils

Castor oil (Sodium castorate in the ingredients) is the conditioning foundation of this bar. It is exceptionally rich in ricinoleic acid, a fatty acid that coats the hair shaft smoothly, reduces frizz, and adds a degree of slip that makes hair easier to comb through after washing. It is also one of the more viscous natural oils, which contributes to lather quality and helps the bar feel substantial rather than sparse on the hair.

Argan oil (Argania spinosa kernel oil) is listed separately as a post-saponification addition, meaning it retains its conditioning properties in the finished bar rather than being fully converted to soap. Cold-pressed from the kernels of the Moroccan argan tree, it is high in oleic and linoleic acids and vitamin E. Its particular quality in hair care is the ability to smooth the cuticle layer without leaving hair feeling heavy or coated, which makes it suitable for fine hair as well as thicker textures.

Rapeseed oil (Sodium rapeseedate) is the base conditioning oil in this bar. Cold-pressed rapeseed is high in oleic and linoleic acids, giving it a fatty acid profile well suited to hair care: it conditions the shaft without heaviness, supports the cuticle layer, and produces a gentle, creamy lather. UK-grown rapeseed is also one of the more traceable natural oils available, and Friendly Soap's switch to it from olive oil reflects both the quality of the ingredient and the practical advantage of sourcing closer to home.

Coconut oil (Sodium cocoate) contributes cleansing action and lather volume. In a bar shampoo it is the component most responsible for lift and removal of sebum and product build-up, balanced here by the higher proportion of conditioning oils so that the overall effect is cleansing without drying.

Who This Bar is For

The obvious answer is anyone with a fragrance sensitivity or reactive scalp. Fragrance allergens, even natural ones derived from essential oils, are among the most frequently cited causes of scalp irritation, itching, and contact dermatitis, and removing them entirely is the most reliable way to eliminate that variable. If you have tried scented shampoos and found your scalp uncomfortable afterwards, a fragrance-free formulation is the logical starting point.

Beyond sensitivity, this bar suits anyone who prefers their hair care unscented for practical reasons: those who wear a particular perfume and do not want competing fragrance in their hair, those who find strongly scented products headache-inducing in enclosed spaces, or those who simply prefer not to smell of anything after washing.

The oil profile also makes it well suited to dry, fine, or colour-treated hair. The combination of castor and argan in particular is conditioning without being heavy, which means it does not weigh down fine hair the way richer bars can.

Switching to a Shampoo Bar

Shampoo bars require a brief adjustment period, typically one to three weeks, while the scalp recalibrates from liquid shampoo's stronger detergent action. During this period hair may feel different to usual: slightly heavier, or with a different texture at the roots. This is normal and passes. The adjustment tends to be shorter with bars like this one that use a gentler oil base rather than synthetic surfactants.

Hard water can reduce lather and leave a mineral residue on hair. If you are in a hard water area and find the bar is not rinsing cleanly, a diluted apple cider vinegar rinse after washing (roughly one tablespoon to a cup of water) will clear any mineral build-up and restore shine.

How to Use

Wet hair thoroughly. Run the bar directly along the hair from roots to mid-lengths, or lather between the palms first and apply as you would liquid shampoo. Work into the scalp with fingertips rather than nails. Rinse thoroughly with warm water, ensuring all lather is removed, particularly at the nape of the neck. A second application is rarely necessary unless hair is heavily soiled or product-laden.

Between uses, store the bar on a draining soap dish or wooden rack away from the direct flow of the shower. Keeping it dry between washes extends its life considerably. A bar used daily will typically last four to six weeks depending on hair length and thickness.
