Gentle Dog Shampoo for Puppies & Sensitive Skin

First baths shouldn't be overwhelming. This unscented, ultra-gentle shampoo introduces puppies to grooming without the sensory overload of fragrances, whilst providing safe, effective cleansing for adult dogs with reactive or sensitive skin.

Formulated in the UK specifically for delicate skin, this natural formula uses olive oil derivatives and aloe vera to cleanse whilst maintaining the skin's protective barrier. The complete absence of fragrance—natural or synthetic—makes it ideal for puppies learning that bath time is safe, and for dogs whose skin reacts to even gentle essential oils.

Key Facts:

  • 250ml bottle, typically 15-20 washes for puppies, 8-12 for adult dogs
  • Completely unscented—no essential oils, no fragrances
  • Olive oil & aloe vera for gentle cleansing and moisturising
  • Chamomile water soothes irritated, reactive skin
  • Vegan, cruelty-free, pH balanced for puppies and sensitive dogs
  • Made in UK, recyclable aluminium packaging
  • Free from parabens, SLS, harsh chemicals

Why Unscented Matters

For puppies: A puppy's first experiences with bathing shape their lifelong attitude to grooming. Strong scents—even natural ones like lavender—can be overwhelming to a young dog's sensitive nose, creating negative associations with bath time. This unscented formula lets puppies focus on learning that water and handling are safe, without the additional sensory challenge of unfamiliar smells.

For sensitive adult dogs: Many dogs with skin sensitivities react not to the cleansing agents but to fragrance compounds—whether synthetic or from essential oils. Even "natural" fragrances can trigger contact dermatitis, itching, or irritation in reactive dogs. This formula eliminates that variable entirely, making it genuinely hypoallergenic.

For dogs with anxiety around scents: Some dogs have had traumatic experiences with grooming products or associate certain smells with stressful situations. An unscented shampoo provides a neutral, non-triggering bathing experience.

The Gentle Ingredients

Olive oil glycereth-8 esters are derived from olive oil and provide gentle, effective cleansing without stripping natural oils. Unlike harsher surfactants that can damage the skin barrier, olive oil derivatives work with the skin's natural chemistry. They're particularly suitable for puppies whose skin barrier is still developing and for adult dogs with compromised skin conditions.

Aloe barbadensis (aloe vera) leaf juice soothes and moisturises whilst providing gentle antibacterial properties. Aloe is proven to reduce inflammation and support healing of minor skin irritations—perfect for dogs who scratch or lick due to sensitivity. The natural gel helps lock in moisture without leaving residue.

Chamomile flower water (Anthemis nobilis) provides anti-inflammatory benefits without the concentration of essential oils that might irritate sensitive skin. Chamomile water is gentler than chamomile oil whilst still offering skin-soothing properties. It's particularly effective for dogs with hot spots or areas of redness from scratching.

Glycerine is a humectant that draws moisture into the skin and helps maintain hydration. For puppies with naturally soft skin and sensitive dogs prone to dryness, glycerine ensures the cleansing process doesn't leave skin tight or uncomfortable.

The formula uses plant-based surfactants (cocamidopropyl betaine, decyl glucoside) that are exceptionally mild—gentle enough for human baby products and perfect for delicate canine skin. These create effective lather for thorough cleansing without the harshness of traditional detergents.

Thoughtful Packaging

Presented in recyclable aluminium bottles rather than plastic. The 250ml size is ideal for puppies (who don't need much product) and for testing on sensitive adult dogs to ensure they don't react before committing to larger bottles. Aluminium is infinitely recyclable and doesn't leach chemicals into the formula.

About Paws Right There

Paws Right There was founded by pet owners frustrated with the choice between effective-but-chemical-laden pet shampoos and natural-but-ineffective alternatives. Based in the UK, they set out to create grooming products that actually work whilst being safe for pets, people, and the planet.

Their sensitive skin range was developed specifically for puppies and dogs with reactive skin after recognising that even "natural" products with essential oils can trigger sensitivities. By creating a genuinely unscented formula—not just "fragrance-free" but with no scent compounds whatsoever—they've filled a gap in the market for dogs who need the gentlest possible option.

Every product is pH-balanced specifically for canine skin (which is more alkaline than human skin), vegan, cruelty-free, and free from parabens, SLS, and unnecessary additives. They're transparent about what goes into their formulas and why each ingredient earns its place—no fillers, no marketing gimmicks, just effective grooming products that work.

How to Use

Wet your puppy or dog's coat thoroughly with lukewarm water. Temperature matters—puppies especially are sensitive to water that's too hot or too cold. Take your time with this step, using a gentle hand shower or cup to gradually wet the coat.

Apply a small amount of shampoo—puppies need very little product, and even large dogs require less than you'd think. The formula lathers well despite being gentle, so a little goes a long way.

Massage gently into the coat from skin to tip. For puppies having their first bath, combine this with soft reassurance and treats. The massage action is as important as the product itself—it helps puppies associate bath time with pleasant sensations.

Rinse thoroughly. This is crucial with sensitive skin—any residue can cause itching or irritation. Keep rinsing until the water runs completely clear. For puppies, this is also good practice for learning to tolerate water and handling.

For puppies (8 weeks+): Keep first baths short and positive. You're teaching them that grooming is safe and pleasant, not trying to achieve perfect cleanliness. Even if you don't get them completely clean the first time, a positive experience matters more.

For sensitive adult dogs: Patch test on a small area first, especially if switching from another product. Wait 24 hours to ensure no reaction before full bathing.

Frequency: Puppies rarely need frequent bathing—every 6-8 weeks unless they get particularly muddy. Over-bathing can strip natural oils their developing skin needs. Adult dogs with sensitive skin typically do best with bathing every 3-4 weeks, though this varies by coat type and lifestyle.

Storage: Keep the cap tightly closed between uses. Use within 12 months of opening. Store away from direct sunlight.

What Makes This Different

Most "sensitive" dog shampoos still contain fragrance—either synthetic or from essential oils like lavender or chamomile oil. While marketed as "natural" and "gentle," these fragrances can still trigger reactions in truly sensitive dogs. The essential oil concentration that creates a noticeable scent is often enough to cause issues.

This formula contains chamomile flower water (hydrosol) rather than chamomile essential oil. The water retains anti-inflammatory benefits without the concentration of aromatic compounds that can irritate. It's the difference between drinking chamomile tea and applying pure chamomile oil to your skin—one is gentle, the other can be overwhelming.

The olive oil derivatives provide genuinely gentle cleansing that works with the skin's natural chemistry rather than against it. Many puppy shampoos still use harsh detergents that strip oils, requiring heavy conditioning afterwards. This formula cleanses effectively whilst maintaining the skin barrier, so no separate conditioner is needed.

For puppies specifically, the absence of scent means they can focus on the new sensations of water, handling, and lather without the additional challenge of processing unfamiliar smells. This makes early grooming experiences less overwhelming and helps establish positive associations that last a lifetime.
