The average kitchen sponge is a block of petroleum-based foam that sheds microplastics into your washing-up water and ends up in landfill. These do neither. Jungle Culture's dual-sided sponges pair organic cellulose with natural loofah fibre to cover the full range of washing-up tasks in one compostable tool, from wine glasses to burnt-on pans, and they last considerably longer than the foam alternative.

Key Facts

  • Pack of 4 dual-sided sponges
  • Soft side: organic cellulose plant fibre
  • Scrubbing side: natural loofah fibre
  • Each sponge lasts approximately 2 months with daily use
  • Machine washable at 40°C to extend life
  • Fully compostable at end of life
  • Plastic-free, packaged in recyclable kraft paper box
  • Made in the United Kingdom by Jungle Culture

The Two Materials

Organic cellulose is derived from plant fibre and has been used in quality sponges for decades. It holds many times its own weight in water and releases it evenly as you work, making it efficient on glassware, crockery, non-stick pans, and any surface where a scratchy sponge would cause damage. It also dries relatively quickly between uses, which reduces the sour smell that develops in synthetic foam kept perpetually damp on the side of the sink.

Loofah fibre comes from the dried interior of the loofah plant, a member of the cucumber family cultivated across Asia and Africa. The fibres are firm, coarse, and highly durable, providing enough abrasion to shift burnt-on food and stubborn grease without the hardness that damages cookware. Loofah is naturally antimicrobial, a practical benefit in a kitchen context where sponges are in constant contact with food residue, and unlike synthetic scourers it does not shed microplastic fragments into the water.

The dual-sided format removes the need for separate tools. The cellulose side handles delicate items and general washing-up; a flip of the sponge brings the loofah into play for anything that needs more effort.

What This Isn't

These sponges are not indestructible. With daily heavy use the loofah side will show wear after six to eight weeks, which is natural materials behaving as they should rather than a defect. Machine washing extends the life meaningfully but does not reset it indefinitely.

The loofah side is effective on most cookware but not suitable for mirror-polished stainless steel or highly lacquered surfaces where even moderate abrasion will leave marks. For those surfaces, use the cellulose side only.

Loofah stiffens when dry. A brief soak in warm water brings it back to its working texture within a minute or two.

How to Use and Care For Them

For general washing up: use the cellulose side for glassware, crockery, and non-stick pans with a small amount of washing-up liquid. For stubborn residue: flip to the loofah side. Dampen first if it has dried out and apply firm, consistent pressure in short strokes. After each use: rinse both sides thoroughly, squeeze out excess water, and leave to air dry upright rather than lying flat. Drying between uses is the single most effective way to extend the sponge's life. Machine washing: when the sponge looks or smells tired, wash on a 40°C cycle and allow to dry fully before returning to use. Composting: cut into smaller pieces and add to a home compost bin at end of life.

Perfect For

  • Households cooking regularly with varied cookware
  • Anyone wanting to remove synthetic foam sponges from the kitchen entirely
  • Cast iron cookware users needing gentle and firm cleaning in one tool
  • Kitchens where a single versatile tool is preferred over multiple products
  • Bathroom tiles, oven doors, and ceramic hob surfaces where controlled abrasion is useful
  • Those who have noticed the smell and deterioration of synthetic sponges after a few weeks
  • A practical, repeatable everyday purchase from a known natural materials brand

What Makes These Different

Most natural sponges are single-material: either cellulose or a scrubbing fibre, but rarely both in one product. The dual-sided format here is a genuine functional decision. Both materials are fully compostable at end of life, which separates them from conventional polyurethane foam sponges that do not biodegrade and shed microplastics throughout their use. The pack of four covers approximately eight months of daily use and means a replacement is always to hand.
